Foot & Ankle Fractures Q & A

What are foot and ankle fractures?

Foot and ankle fractures occur when one or more bones in the foot or ankle break from trauma, overuse, or underlying medical conditions. The injuries can range from tiny stress fractures to complete breaks.

Symptoms may include:

  • Sharp, throbbing, or aching pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising or discoloration
  • Tenderness to touch
  • Difficulty putting weight on the foot or ankle
  • Visible deformity in more serious cases
  • Stiffness or ankle instability

If you have symptoms of a foot or ankle fracture, contact Arise Foot and Ankle for prompt medical attention.

What causes foot and ankle fractures?

You can have a fracture from sudden injuries such as twisting the ankle during sports, slipping or tripping, or landing incorrectly after a jump or fall. High-impact accidents can cause more severe fractures, and overuse injuries can, too.

In addition, repetitive stress from running, jumping, or prolonged standing can weaken bones and lead to stress fractures.

Certain medical conditions, like osteoporosis or structural abnormalities in the feet, can make fractures even more likely from minor trauma.

Can foot and ankle fractures heal on their own?

Some fractures may seem mild, but they rarely heal correctly without proper care. Stress fractures may improve with rest, but they still require Dr. Stephens’ evaluation to ensure they’re stable.

More serious fractures generally don’t heal on their own and may result in chronic pain, arthritis, deformity, or ongoing instability if not treated. Even though fractures and sprains can feel similar, you still need medical attention after a foot or ankle injury.

How are foot and ankle fractures treated?

At Arise Foot and Ankle, treatment begins with a full foot and ankle evaluation to determine the extent of the injury. Dr. Stephens may take X-rays onsite to confirm whether you have a fracture and to assess its severity.

Next, he creates a personalized treatment plan and discusses all available options, including both conservative and surgical care.

Treatment depends on the severity and type of fracture. Common approaches include:

  • Immobilization with a cast, boot, or brace
  • Rest, ice, elevation, and anti-inflammatory medications
  • Bone repositioning (reduction) for misaligned fractures
  • Surgery using plates, screws, or pins for severe or displaced fractures
  • Physical therapy to restore strength, mobility, and balance after the bone has healed
