Flatfoot Q & A

What is flatfoot?

Flatfoot is a foot condition in which one or both of your feet have little or no arch space (space between the bottom of your foot and the ground when standing up). Foot arches consist of connective tissues and bones.

They act as shock absorbers or springboards, releasing energy as you walk and helping your feet adapt to uneven walking surfaces. Foot arches also help protect blood vessels and nerves in the soles of your feet.

Babies are naturally flat-footed, but often develop arches as they begin walking or later during childhood. Some people never develop arches or experience arch collapse as they age because of a medical condition or structural problem.

Which symptoms can flatfoot cause?

Flatfoot can cause the following symptoms:

  • Foot pain when walking
  • Shin splints
  • Ankle pain
  • Knee pain
  • Hip discomfort
  • Lower back pain
  • Gait abnormalities or disorders
  • Hammertoes
  • Bunions
  • Chronic pain, even during rest

Left untreated, flatfoot increases your risk of developing foot and ankle arthritis, ankle sprains, instability, and repetitive strain injuries.

What are the risk factors for flatfoot?

Though the exact cause of flatfoot may not be entirely clear, its risk factors include:

  • Genetics
  • Obesity
  • Aging
  • Foot injuries
  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Clubfoot
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Down Syndrome
  • Other genetic syndromes
  • Chronic tendinitis
  • Charcot foot

  • Weak foot muscles

Dr. Stephens identifies the root cause of your discomfort to determine how to best treat flatfoot and optimize your mobility.

How is flatfoot diagnosed?

Dr. Stephens completes a comprehensive evaluation by examining your feet and ankles while you sit, stand up, and walk. He evaluates the shape and position of your feet and how they move. He also discusses your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle habits.

Arise Foot and Ankle offers onsite diagnostic tests, including foot X-rays when needed, to finalize a diagnosis.

How is flatfoot treated?

Your personalized flatfoot treatment plan may consist of one or more of the following:

  • Footwear changes
  • Arch supports
  • Healthy weight management
  • Medications
  • Custom orthotics
  • Physical therapy
  • Surgery for severe cases

If you don’t have any adverse symptoms, you don’t need treatment. Dr. Stephens may simply keep an eye on your condition to see if it worsens over time. He follows up to ensure your best possible outcome.
