Bunions Q & A

What are bunions?

Bunions are bony bumps that often form near the base of the big toe, protruding outward and becoming painful over time. Bunions typically appear because of pressure or repetitive strain, but some babies are born with bunions. They can also form on your other toes.

While common and often not a cause for concern, bunions can be uncomfortable and lead to complications or prevent you from staying active. If this is the case, see Dr. Stephens for an evaluation.

Which symptoms can bunions cause?

Symptoms of bunions include:

  • Protruding growth, often at the base of your big toe
  • Stiffness
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Redness or other discoloration
  • Burning
  • Reduced ability to bend or move your big toe
  • Corns
  • Calluses
  • Hammertoes
  • Numbness
  • Hardened skin

Bunion pain might worsen over time or become more severe when wearing certain types of shoes.

What are the risk factors for bunions?

Bunion risk factors include:

  • Family history of bunions
  • Abnormal foot or bone structure
  • Repetitive movements
  • Poor-fitting or narrow shoes
  • Pressure on the big toe
  • Walking mechanics
  • Standing for long periods
  • Working on your feet
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Lupus
  • Being female
  • History of foot injuries
  • Being an athlete

More than 70% of people with bunions have a parent who has also had them. However, anyone can develop bunions, and the cause isn’t always clear.

Bunions increase your risk of developing bursitis, osteoarthritis, hammertoes, or similar foot and ankle problems.

How are bunions diagnosed?

Dr. Stephens diagnoses bunions by examining your feet and toes. He reviews your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle. He may suggest that you undergo blood testing, onsite X-rays, or other imaging procedures to confirm a diagnosis, determine the severity of your condition, and determine the best course of treatment.

How are bunions treated?

Your individualized bunion treatment plan may consist of:

  • Custom orthotics
  • Altering your footwear
  • Bunion pads
  • Taping
  • Iceing
  • Medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Surgery

Dr. Stephens focuses on non-surgical treatments, but offers surgery in severe cases or if surgery is the best way to provide long-lasting relief. Call him anytime you have concerns or questions about your treatment plan.
